In Ireland, Schools which have received the Green Flag as
part of the Green Schools programme are engaged in further water
conservation projects as part of a programme to retain the Green
flag.
Schools are now undertaking projects in water and energy
conservation. Saving water also saves energy as the carbon
footprint generated supplying water and treating waste water for
the average household is the same as the average carbon footprint
to heat that household.
Many schools who have received the Green Flag have fitted
Mecon Water Savers and recorded water savings of upto 25%. The
company Mecon offer a free fitting service to
schools and will fit the Water Savers outside of school hours.
One large Dublin school has 120 Mecon Water Savers in use. A
water meter was set up to monitor water usage before and after
the fitting of the Mecon Water Saver. Water meter readings are
being actively monitored and results plotted on graphs.
Various grants and subsidies are available to offset the cost
of water saver fitting in schools. Some of the grants which are
available, cover the complete cost of
installation. Contact Mecon for details. info@meconwml.com
